Dear friends,
At some point in the past, we have worked together or spoken of playback theatre. Once again, I am offering to provide a 12-hour faerie/queer workshop on playback theatre without charge, in the Bay area. I’m putting out feelers to see if this will be able to happen between November 3 and 7. If you have any interest, or know someone who might, please read on:
1) Over the past year, a group of radical faeries have been envisioning the next phase of faerie tribal life through a project called the Quest for Radical Cross-pollinators. You can check this out at tribes.tribe.net/qrc. The culmination of many months of networking is the Faeposium scheduled to be in the Bay area on November 8.
2) I propose to offer a workshop in playback theatre before the Faeposium, so we can provide a performance during the event. Many potential participants will be at Wolf Creek Sanctuary for Samhain for the days around Oct. 31. That’s why I’m suggesting weekdays in between Samhain and the Faeposium for this workshop. In my mind, the ideal dates are November 3-4, because that would end on Election Day, and I’d LOVE to present a public performance on the evening of Election Day to help people process their feelings about it. I’m also very interested in what ideas and visions others bring to the table about how to make this workshop a super-success.
3) What is playback theatre? Check out playbacknet.org/about/.
4) The ultimate goal of the workshop would be to train some faerie/queer playback theatre trainers, so more people are able to share the community-building and humanity-affirming power of playback in the faerie/queer world.
5) What’s it going to take to make this happen? Just a few little things. A commitment SOON from at least 6 people that they plan to attend. Someone who steps forward to handle finding a place for this to happen (a big empty room is fine) for minimal or no cost. And if we choose to do a public show, someone to market that with emails and fliers and posters, and to find a venue for the show (seating up to 100 or so) at minimal or no cost. A raised stage is not needed – a big room with chairs would be fine.
If this rings a bell with you (DING!), please let me know ASAP. And of course, feel free to ask questions and make suggestions. If this doesn’t happen so soon, I’m very interested in discovering how/when/where it might be able to happen.
Enthusiastically,
Mountaine (based outside Asheville, NC)

Re: Proposal for faerie playback theatre in Bay Area
Wed, October 29, 2008 - 6:51 AMA few weeks ago I sent an email offering to give a faerie/queer workshop on Playback Theatre in the Bay area. There was some interest, but not enough people to make this fly.
Now I’m rethinking the offer – how about a workshop Sunday November 8th, (maybe noon-5), then we’d take a break, and give a public performance in the evening (maybe 7) ?
What is playback theatre? Improv based on true stories told by audience members – it’s all about honoring diverse stories. See www.playbacknet.org/about/. I've been doing this with Asheville (NC) Playback Theatre for over 13 years, and have been teaching playback for years at faerie gatherings at Zuni, Short Mountain, Destiny, and in Europe and Thailand.
Saturday November 7th will likely be a hugely wonderful day of radical faerie stuff in the Bay Area – the memorial for megasweet dear John Burnside, followed by the 1st ever Radical Faeposium and Cabaret. Doing playback the next day would provide a way of continuing and building the energy for both workshop participants and an evening audience. Deep stories about what faerie means to us are likely to emerge, and would be honored through spontaneous theatre.
No theatre experience is required; however, we rely on deep listening, spontaneity, non-verbal communication, multi-faceted creativity, and other life skills familiar to most faeries to make playback work. The workshop would be a gift from me to the faerie universe, free of money encumbrances.
I need to make a final decision by Thursday afternoon 10/30 about whether I’m going to travel to do this or not. So if you’re interested in being in the workshop and/or hooking us up with a space to do it, let me know immediately at mountaine@gmail.com. If this is gonna happen, we’ll need to secure a space for Sunday afternoon and evening – I trust that if there's enough interest, this will fall into place. I’ll send another email out in 2 days with the final decision on whether it's a yay or a nay.
Enthusiastically,
Mountaine
